Preparing a Claim

If your house is destroyed due to a disaster then you will be forced to leave the house for your own safety. In such a case a family should not worry more about the damage instead they should focus more on the safety of their family and filing the claim in such cases. There are a number of things you need to do at the time of force evacuation that will help in future filing of an insurance claim. These are discussed below.

Things to Do at Evacuation

You should bring all important papers especially the insurance contract along with you. You need to know the name and phone of the company as well. Prepare a list of items present in the house and if you can, then make a video of the house interior.

No Access

If you have been evacuated and no time was given to you for preparing any inventory list then you should notify your insurer. It is very important that you call immediately so that the insurance company knows a disaster has occurred. The more serious homes are handles first. Contacting the insurance company is not only important for getting the process started but also if your contract contains a loss of use coverage then you will be paid for your family's stay, meals and basic expenses at a motel until the house is repaired. This is a very good coverage as you are able to take care of your family immediately. The claim process will start when the adjuster makes a damage report and that can be made when access is allowed to the house so be patient during the claim process as it can take some time.

Claim Process and Repairs

When you are allowed access to your home you should make an inventory list and document the damages. A video of the damage is also good idea. Recording the damage can help speed up the claim process. Once you have done this you can start the temporary repairs such as placing a tarp on roof to stop leaks. Make sure the temporary repairs are small because if they are big you may not get the reimbursement for these expenses from the insurance company. Permanent repairs have to be started only after the insurance company says so. If you start the permanent repairs the insurance company may not provide the full repayment.

Work with the insurance Agent

Sometimes you need to do extra work in order to negotiate the claim. reason behind this is that one type of disaster may be covered in the insurance claim and the other may not be. For instance a tornado or hurricane comes and drops a tree on your roof. Now this damage is easily distinguishable and will be covered in the contract but what if along with these floods also come. You will need to work so that the damage from the covered perils is identified and you get the payment because the flood coverage will not be present in your policy unless you have bought the special flood insurance.
