Comparison Factors

Not only the doctors and preexisting conditions are the measure to compare two health plans but you also need to look into other factors. These are:

Emergency and Hospital Care

The health plan you are finding should also state the hospitals and the emergency rooms available to you. This is very important because you will have to see the medical staff immediately in emergencies and prior knowledge of location of the hospitals is a must. One very important thing to note here is the definition of emergency. You may think that a certain situation is an emergency where as your health plan might not consider it as one. So check which types of emergencies are covered and which are not. It may also be required by the plan to check with the physician before getting emergency treatment.

Regular Physicals and Health Screenings

Regular health screenings and physical fitness screenings are also a good way of maintaining health but you will have to check it in your plan if these are covered. Most of the managed health polices have a yearly screening covered and some don't cover any. Some policies also provide coverage for immunization and baby checkups for your children and some don't.

Prescription Drug Coverage

Health plans that include prescription drug coverage should be taken so that the drugs that you are using for your health situation or you may need in future get covered. This coverage varies among different policies. Some policies can cover them completely, some not at all and some can cove partial of the prescription drugs.

OB-GYN

Check out all the conditions as described in previous article in point 1, if you are seeing a Gynecologist or Obstetrician and check if the current doctor you are seeing is covered in the health policy. The fertility and pregnancy coverage are now varying from plan to plan and therefore you need to find out how much of the fertility treatments, pregnancy and birth care is covered in the plan and how much you need to pay out of your pocket.

Additional Services

Additionally, check if the plan provides counseling, home nursing, home health care, alternative treatments, experimental treatments, hospice, drug and alcohol rehabilitation and chiropractic services or not.

Costs

Comparing costs is a very important thing in deciding which health care plan is good for you. First thing to look for is the amount of deductible that you have to pay before the insurance policy starts covering you. Some polices may require that you have fully paid the deductibles before the coverage is provided and some polices may start the coverage immediately. Sometimes you want to use a doctor or a hospital that is not in the network of the plan and for that check out how much extra deductible the insurance company charges you. Some plans have a lifetime limit on how much it will pay and some have both lifetime and yearly limits. Also check how much fees you may need to pay if you visit a doctor or hospital.

Exclusions

Before you decide on any policy make sure you see its exclusion list. Each policy may exclude several items that will not be covered in the policy. Choose the policy that doesn't exclude the current health issue you have.
