You have bought your car, have signed an
insurance policy after a lot of research and time. There are still some issues that are not discussed that commonly but they are important in helping you to manage the coverage you have bought.
Switching Auto Insurance Companies
When you buy an insurance policy you have a right to terminate it at any time due to any reason. The reason can be moving from one state to another, selling your car, or there is another insurance company that is providing a better premium rate and has excellent customer care. There is a point to remember here that is you have to give a timely notice to the insurance company that you want to terminate the policy. If you are unable to do that the
insurance company can cost you a lot of money and this can also affect your
credit history. How that happens. It is simple.
When you miss the next bill thinking that you will simply get the policy cancelled, the insurance company will send you a bill in advance that is for the next policy term. This will happen because you have not sent the cancellation notice and if you don't pay this bill the company cancels the policy and then this information gets reported and added into your credit history by the bureaus.
Insurance companies do tell that if you don't pay the next year's premium before a certain date your insurance gets cancelled but they will not tell you about the consequences you face as discussed above if you don't send a formal cancellation notice. The worst thing associated with all this is that when you will go to get your next insurance you may face difficulty finding a good policy. Even if you get a policy it will have a high premium because you will be considered a high risk.
How to Cancel Your Policy
It is simple. Call you insurance company and provide them a date on which you want would like the termination. On your notification a form will be sent to you whom you will have to sign and return but read the terms carefully.
Switching the Insurance Company
In case you are planning to switch to a newer company but you don't want to give up your car and still drive it during the process then there should not be lapse of any kind in the coverage. The thing you have to make sure is that the effective date of the termination of previous policy and the date of starting of the new policy should be well coordinated and there is no gap among these dates. If there is, then you may have to pay fines and if an accident occurs during this gap then there will be no coverage and you will solely be responsible for what ever damage has been done.
During the cancellation or switching process of auto insurance give a timely notice and during the official procedure don't get into any sort of harmful impact. If the dates cannot be coordinated there can be other ways to fill the gap discussed in the further readings.
