Choosing an
insurance company doesn't stop here. There are several other ratings and factors to consider other than state department ratings and J.D. Power ratings as mentioned in earlier article.
Insurer's financial strength rating
Final checks for establishing the reliability of a company is to look at Standard & Poor's as well as A.M. Best ratings. Both of these companies measure the ability of a company to pay the claim and publish them as the financial strength of a company. Searching for the insurance company you like in these ratings can give you an idea that they can pay the claim but these ratings don't have to do anything with their customer dealings. Although a well reputed company that is recommended by independent contractors will be a good deal but if you want to look for an unfamiliar company than it's a good place for spending your time.
The ratings are of several types. Starting from A++ up to D. below this grade comes E that shows the company is under a regulatory action due to solvency, a F means that the company is in liquidation and an S means that the company has been suspended. At Standard & Poor's the ratings start from AAA to CC. her R rating means that the company is under regulatory action, NR means that the company is not rated. The companies starting from B+ and upwards in the ratings of both of these services are good to do business with.
Work with an Agent
Even with the new car insurance companies allowing you to buy the
insurance
directly from them over phone or internet still there are several reserves of agents that help you in the buying process. The agents are of two types. One is captive agent who is the representative of only a single company where as the other is an independent agent that works like a broker and represents several companies.
If you work with your own agent then you will get a good opinion because an independent agent will also try to keep you happy. Direct providers are a good option but don't just rule the agents out. In case a broker puts a pressure on you for buying a particular insurance you don't have to make a decision. Use your search that you did for ratings and then decide.
Independent agents have charges for the work they do for you and you can negotiate the price and get it in writing before you sign a policy though them. When you work with agents make sure they are certified either by Professional Insurance Agents or independent Insurance Agents of Americas.
Reputation of the company
You can find the reputation of the company as well by asking your friends, family, peers, Big Business Bureau, market body shops and trusted people. Use all resources explained in above articles before choosing a company and then buy the insurance policy.
